Matadors take a pair from Gila Monsters on the road

YUMA, Ariz. - Arizona Western Matadors Baseball (25-10, 18-8) won a pair of games against Eastern Arizona (21-23, 12-18) sweeping a doubleheader in Thatcher, Ariz., on Tuesday afternoon, winning game one 3-0 before hanging on in game two, 8-7. 

Jorge Carvajal tossed seven shutout innings in the opener, allowing just four hits and striking out five batters in the win.

The Matadors scored a run in the second inning and added on with a run in the fourth and another in the seventh.

Gabriel Perez went 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Three of the Matadors' seven hits in the win were doubles as Oskar Stark and Tyler Leroy also doubled in the win.

Noah Roberts and Marcus Graham each finished the opener 1-for-3 with a run scored.

Perez and Wesley Estrella each went 2-for-4 with two runs batted in in game two to help the Matadors to an 8-7 win.

Brady Nelson started the game, throwing five innings, allowing three earned runs on seven hits while striking out two. 

The Matadors used a big five-run fifth inning to build the lead and were able to fend off the Gila Monsters who scored three runs in the eighth inning to cut the Matadors' lead to 8-7 before Chris Echavarria came on to toss to a scoreless ninth inning. 

Graham finished the second game 2-for-4 with an RBI while Roberts drove in a run and scored two runs in the win.

The Matadors return home on Saturday, April 15, hosting No. 2 ranked Central Arizona in an ACCAC doubleheader beginning at 12:00 pm at Walt Kammann Field.
