Trio of arms leads Baseball to sweep of South Mountain

YUMA, Ariz. – Jorge Carvajal, Brady Nelson, and Roland Marte combined to hold South Mountain to just two runs over the course of 15 innings to help Arizona Western Baseball complete a doubleheader sweep of the Cougars on Friday afternoon, winning both games 3-1.

South Mountain took a 1-0 lead in the second inning but that was the only run allowed by the starter Carvajal who scattered seven hits and struck out four batters.

Wesley Estrella pushed his hitting streak to 14 games, going 3-for-4 with a double to help the Matadors come back and take the opener.

Arizona Western scored a run in the sixth inning to tie the game and scored two runs in the top of the eighth inning before Marte came on to toss a scoreless bottom half of the inning, giving the Matadors the win.

Noah Roberts, Tyler Leroy, and Oskar Roberts all drove in runs in the win while Jared Davis scored two of the Matadors' three runs.

Just like Carvajal in game one, Nelson allowed just one run in his start, surrendering just three hits and striking out three batters in game two.

The Matadors opened the scoring in the first inning and added the would-be winning run in the third inning. South Mountain pushed across a run in the sixth but the Matadors grabbed the run back in the seventh.

Joe Zhu led the Matadors with a pair of hits, finishing the game 2-for-3 with a double while both Davis and Estrella drove in a run in the win.

Marte finished the second game by throwing a scoreless 1.2 innings to help the Matadors sweep the Cougars.

The Matadors return home on Tuesday, March 21, hosting Phoenix College in a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 pm at Walt Kammann Baseball Field.
