Baseball splits doubleheader with Aztecs in Tucson

YUMA, Ariz. – Arizona Western Matadors Baseball (10-6, 4-4) split a pair of games with Pima (12-5, 3-3) winning game one 10-2 before coming up short in game two, losing 11-10 at Aztec Baseball Field in Tucson, Ariz.   

Roland Marte allowed just one earned run in a complete game win in game one, striking out three batters without issuing a walk in the win.

Jared Davis and Wesley Estrella each picked up two hits in the first game with Davis driving in three runs as did Gabriel Perez who went 1-for-4 with a double.

The Matadors fell behind early in game two and fought their way back to put the tying run on base in the ninth inning.

With the Matadors trailing 10-5 entering the seventh inning, Arizona Western scored two runs in the seventh, one in the eighth, and two in the ninth to cut the deficit to one run at 10-9 but stranded the tying run at third base.

Reece Longstaff went 3-for-6 with two doubles and a home run, driving in three runs in the loss. Noah Roberts picked up two hits including a home run while Robert Miranda went 2-for-5 with a home run.

The Matadors are back on the road on Tuesday, heading to Douglas, Ariz., to take on Cochise in a doubleheader starting at Noon.
