Baseball earns doubleheader split at Central Arizona

YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Matadors Baseball team (8-4, 2-2) split a doubleheader on the road with Central Arizona (11-4, 5-1), losing game one 12-2 and winning game two 7-1 on Saturday afternoon in Coolidge, Ariz.

Reece Longstaff went 1-for-2 and drove in one of the Matadors' two runs in a 12-2 game one loss to the Vaqueros.

The Matadors scored both of their two runs in the third inning thanks to a Longstaff infield single and a wild pitch-scoring Wesley Estrella, cutting Central Arizona's lead to 3-2 before Central Arizona scored the final 10 runs of the game.

Estrella and Gabriel Perez each went 1-for-2 with a run scored while Jared Davis finished the game 1-for-3.

Roland Marte pitched 6.2 shutout innings of relief, striking out seven batters as the Matadors earned the doubleheader split with a 7-1 win.

Noah Roberts got the scoring started with a two-run home run in the first inning to give the Matadors the lead. Davis extended the lead in the fourth inning with a two-run single and added three more runs in the eighth inning thanks to an RBI double from Oskar Stark and a two-run double from Estrella.

Joe Zhu went 2-for-4 with a run scored while Roberts finished the game 2-for-4 with a double and a home run while driving in two runs.

The Matadors are at home on Tuesday, hosting Yavapai in a doubleheader beginning at Noon at Walt Kammann Baseball Field.
