Matadors complete doubleheader sweep with 16-0 win over Utah State Eastern
YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Matadors' baseball team (2-0) scored 16 runs on its way to a 16-0 win over Utah State-Eastern (0-2) in game two of a doubleheader on Friday afternoon at Lied Field at Morse Stadium.
Matadors' starting pitcher Jorge Carvajal (1-0) pitched five shutout innings allowing just two hits and striking out seven batters in a complete game win.
The Matadors carried the offensive momentum they had in the final two innings of game one over to game two, sending nine batters to the plate in the first inning. Ben Fierenzi opened the scoring with an RBI double and later scored on a Reece Longstaff infield single to extend the lead to 2-0. After an Oskar Stark RBI groundout upped the lead to 3-0, Robert Miranda knocked in a run before Jared Davis capped off the six-run inning with a two-run double.
After adding a seventh run in the second inning thanks to a Tyler Leroy run-scoring single, Noah Roberts upped the Matadors' lead to 8-0 in the fourth with an RBI single.
For the second time in the game, the Matadors batted around, scoring eight runs in the top of the fifth inning. Joe Zhu drove in three of the Matadors' eight runs in the inning, capping off the frame with a two-run double to bump the Matadors' lead to 16-0. Jared Davis picked up his second double of the game in the inning, driving in his third run of the game.
The Matadors return to action on Saturday, January 27 at 6:00 pm when they face Southern Nevada at Lied Field at Morse Stadium.
