PRESCOTT, Ariz. – The Arizona Western College softball team lost in a tight contest to open up the Region I, Division I Tournament on Friday morning in Prescott. The third-seeded Lady Mats (40-20 overall) lost 3-0 to second-seeded Eastern Arizona (50-10 overall) in a pitcher’s duel.
EAC plated a run in the first to take a 1-0 lead off an RBI single by Vesi Liilii.
Liilii put Eastern up 2-0 with her 11th homer of the season on a solo bomb in the fourth inning.
In the fifth inning, EAC plated one more run for the final tally and a 3-0 lead.
EAC’s Pania Monk (19-5) pitched well to earn the win for the Gila Monsters, and the Lady Matador offense never managed to get on track. Monk only allowed two hits and one walk with five strikeouts.
Makenna Stram (21-10) took a tough loss after limiting a high-powered Eastern Arizona offense. She surrendered three runs on six hits while walking four and striking out one.
The Lady Mats will take on Central Arizona College at 1, with the loser being eliminated from the tournament. The winner of the game will play the loser of Yavapai and Eastern Arizona tomorrow morning.
