YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western softball team wrapped up its season last week, and three players earned spots on the All-Arizona Community College Athletic Conference and All-Region teams. Shortstop Allison Betty was named to the All-ACCAC First Team and All-Region I Division I Team. Pitcher Belinda Gonzalez and catcher Jessica Alvarez both earned spots on the All-ACCAC Third Team.
Betty finished the season on a tear after posting 10 straight multi-hit games before her streak was snapped in the season finale. She led the Lady Mats with a .461 average and a .528 on-base percentage. The freshman also swatted eight home runs and 15 doubles while only striking out three times in 152 at bats. She also had a 19 game hitting streak during the course of the season.
In the circle, Gonzalez was a rock for the Lady Mats all season. The sophomore won 20 games and threw an astounding 175.1 innings (second-most in the conference) with a 3.43 ERA. She averaged five strikeouts per seven innings and struck out 126 (third-most in the ACCAC). Gonzalez won her final four starts in the circle. She even contributed at the plate with a .435 on-base percentage when the team was short-handed in the middle of the season. She hit in the winning run in extra innings at Mesa on March 9 in a 4-2 victory.
Alvarez split time behind the plate during the season, but she was a staple in the lineup whether listed as the catcher or designated player. She hit .407 and swatted 20 doubles and seven homers while hitting in 40 RBI (second on the team) in 140 at-bats.
The Lady Mats closed the season 36-21 after splitting at Eastern Arizona on Saturday.
