Phoenix, Ariz. – More big offensive innings, shutdown defensive innings, and a combined no-hitter highlighted the Matadors double-header road sweep of GateWay Community College on Tuesday.
The Mats offense struck immediately and hardly let up while three Matador pitchers combined to hold GateWay to just one hit in ten innings and a pair of shutouts.
Arizona Western started the onslaught with the first batter of the day as Sabrina Garcia doubled to start the first inning. But it took two outs before Garcia could score, coming in on Andrea Cline’s two run homer.
Koryne Coddington shutdown the Geckos in the first two innings from the circle while preserving the 2-0 lead.
The Matadors followed the same formula from the first again in the third when Allie Tito doubled to start the frame. Garcia blasted another two-run homer to double the Arizona Western lead.
After another scoreless frame from Coddington and the Matador defense, Arizona Western broke the game open in the top of the fourth.
Chloe Garcia and Michelle Roldan each singled before Garcia scored on Reina Tsuma’s single.Tito reached on a dropped third strike that scored both Roldan and Tsuma. The Mats would really open the frame on a three-run homer from Danielle Burgos. Cassandra Valle launched a three-run homer of her own to cap a nine run inning.
Coddington completed the game from the circle with ten strikeouts only allowing one walk and a single hit over five innings as the Lady Mats took game one 13-0.
Game two, started with a Garcia double as well and she scored on a pair of groundouts to get the early lead.
Sarah Velasquez similarly shutdown GateWay in the bottom of the first before the Matadors opened up game two in the second.
After Valle was hit by a pitch to leadoff the inning, Aylin Campa smashed a two-run homer. One out later, Yassiel Lazo belted a solo home run. The rampage continued as Garcia, Moore, and Burgos all singled, and Cline doubled to complete a six run inning.
Another perfect inning from Velasquez allowed the AWC offense to pile on in the third.
With two outs, Nicole Moran singled as did Lazo. A couple of walks then forced home a run before a two-run double off the bat of Burgos. Cline capped the inning with an RBI double to extend the Matador lead to 12-0.
Kanani Vizcarra worked a clean fifth inning, in relief of Velasquez to complete the double-header sweep, and seal the combined no-hitter.
Velasquez struck out five in 4 innings while allowing just two baserunners, both walks.
The Matadors improve to 13-1 on the season and starting conference play 4-0. GateWay falls to 3-6-1 and 2-4 in ACCAC play.
The Lady Matadors continue on the road this week traveling to play Paradise Valley on Saturday, February 16th beginning at 12pm before returning home on February 19th to host Pima at 12pm on Charlie Dine Field.
