SB: Mats Earn Sweep of Mesa

YUMA, Ariz. –A pitcher’s duel seemed to settle the offense into action as the #5 Arizona Western Lady Matadors (18-3 overall, 11-1 ACCAC) notched a double-header sweep of the Mesa Thunderbirds (15-7 overall, 9-7 ACCAC) Saturday at Charlie Dine Field.

In game one, Iliana Manzano’s RBI double plated Cassandra Valle in the fourth for the only run of the contest.

Anahi Grijalva, the reigning ACCAC Pitcher of the Week for the second week in a row, struck out eight while navigating around four hits and a walk for his second complete game shutout of the season while running her record to 10-2.

In game two, the Matadors settled in offensively with consistent contact. The Mats tallied ten hits, eight of them being singles.

Alyssa Darby was in the middle of the action with a 2-4 day, adding 2 RBI while scoring twice.

Five other Matadors had RBI’s in support of McKenzie Gray who improved to 8-1 after tossing a complete game while surrendering both runs and four hits while walking three and striking out one.

Arizona Western will be on the road for the next week beginning with a showdown in Coolidge against Central Arizona on Tuesday. The double-header begins at noon.
