TUCSON, Ariz. – While heartbreak struck in game 1, the #5 Arizona Western Lady Matadors (16-3 overall, 9-1 ACCAC) delivered retribution with a late rally and win in game two over the Pima Aztecs (2-5 overall, 2-5 ACCAC) at the West Campus Aztec Softball Field Tuesday.
A solo home run in the bottom of the sixth spelled disaster for the Lady Matadors had their 13 game winning streak halted on a 1-0 loss to the Aztecs.
Game two saw Pima control the ball game answering back AWC’s run in the top of the first with three in the bottom of the inning.
The teams traded runs in the third before Arizona Western tied it in the top of the fourth with two runs on a homer from Cassandra Valle, and momentarily took the lead in the fifth.
But Pima responded with a four-run fifth inning to take an 8-5 lead.
Nicole Moran’s RBI single scored Alyssa Darby and Valle scored to pull within one later in the inning.
With one out in the top of the seventh, Karina Guerra came into the game as a pinch hitter. Guerra was hit by a pitch in a scary moment and Nylze Salazar re-entered to run.
Darby deliverd an RBI double to tie the game before Valle singled her home to put Arizona Western back in front.
Grijalva finished off the seventh inning to seal the 8-7 win.
Arizona Western returns to Charlie Dine Field in Yuma on Saturday hosting Mesa for two games beginning at Noon. The games will be unavailable via livestream.
