SB: Lady Mats Swept in Thatcher

THATCHER, Ariz. –The first losing streak of the season for the #6 Arizona Western Lady Matadors (19-6 overall, 12-4 ACCAC) hit Thursday afternoon as the Eastern Arizona Gila Monsters (14-11 overall, 12-4 ACCAC) swept a twin-bill by scores of 2-1 and 8-2

The Lady Matadors offense sputtered behind starter Anahi Grijalva in game one, only providing an early run.

That came in the first inning with two-outs as Cassandra Valle tripled before scoring on Nicole Moran’s single.

The rest of the day belonged to Eastern Arizona. After two outs in the third, an error in the outfield extended the inning for Taylor Murphy’s two run double which was just enough offense for the Gila Monsters.

Grijalva struck out the final batter of the inning, one of twelve k’s on the day in six innings.

The Matadors had their rally in the seventh against Reegan Leppien.

With one out Nylze Salazar doubled in front of Azalea Moore’s rope to left field. As Salazar held up to return to the bag before it dropped, Eastern made a perfect relay throw home and tagged Salazar out.

Leppien struck out the next batter to end the game.

Leppien did not allow another run after the first for Eastern as the Gila Monsters took game one, 2-1.

The Gila Monsters continued the momentum in the second game, scoring six runs in the first two innings against McKenzie Gray.

Eastern hit two homers in the ball game and tacked on a pair of runs in the sixth.

Azalea Moore connected on her second home run of the week while Salazar added a double but it wasn’t enough as Arizona Western was swept for the first time of the year, falling 8-2.

Arizona Western returns home on Saturday for a double-header at Charlie Dine Field against Scottsdale beginning at Noon.
