HENDERSON, Nev. – Two games, two more wins for the Lady Matadors as Arizona Western (4-1) tallied 24 more runs on Saturday.
The Mats have already posted 47 runs in their first five games.
Arizona Western jumped all over Utah State University Eastern in game one, piling up eight early runs in a 15-0 win.
Danielle Burgos two-run double in the first capped a three run inning.
The Mats added five more in the second thanks to the long ball. Aylin Campa belted a two-run homer and Yasiel Lazo cranked a three-run home run of her own.
Arizona Western put the game away with a six-run fourth, before adding a solo run in fifth to back starting pitcher Koryne Coddington. Coddington tossed four scoreless innings only surrendering one hit and one walk in the win.
Game two saw the Lady Mats take on the host Coyotes of Southern Nevada.
The Lady Mats struck for a pair of manufactured runs in the first, but the Coyotes answered with one of the own in the bottom half of the frame.
Up 4-1 in the third, Michelle Roldan belted a three-run homer to open up a six run lead before the Mats tacked on one more in the inning on a Reina Tsuma RBI double.
Coddington pitched most of the way before Sarah Velazquez struck out the side to seal a 9-4 win over the Coyotes.
Arizona Western closes out the Kickoff Classic at 4-1.
The Lady Mats return to Yuma on Thursday at the Pacific Avenue Athletic Complex to open up the Great Western Shootout. AWC will see some familiar faces when they play Utah State University Eastern again, beginning at 10:30am.
