SB: Burgos 8-Hits Lead Sweep of Gauchos
GLENDALE, Ariz. – Danielle Burgos continued her torrid pace with an eight hit day, even producing a run in her lone out, as the Arizona Western College Matadors swept the Glendale Gauchos Tuesday afternoon
Arizona Western struck first as Sabrina Garcia walked and stole second before Aylin Campa’s bunt moved her to third. Danielle Burgos grounded out but brought home Garcia for the first run of the game.
In the second, Allie Tito walked and Garcia reached on a bunt single. Campa’s bunt forced an error that score Tito and moved Garcia to third.
Garcia swiped home before Burgos registered her first single of the game. Andrea Cline singled home Burgos and Campa to stretch the Matador lead to 5-0.
In the third, with runners on the corners, Campa singled home Tito to further the lead.
The Lady Mats added a run in the fifth before opening it up in the sixth. Garcia’s two run double and Burgos’ two run single made the Matadors lead 11-0.
Matador starter Koryne Coddington had tossed five scoreless innings until that point while navigating around five Glendale hits.
The Gauchos broke through in the sixth with two runners on. Josette Valedez ripped a two run triple before scoring on Alyssa Stachura’s sacrifice fly.
Coddington improved her nation best record to 17-1 as the Mats secured an 11-3 victory for win number 29 on the season.
In game two, the Matadors again jumped out in front as Burgos singled and stole second with two outs. Andrea Cline singled her home.
Lady Mats starter Sarah Velasquez worked around a one-out walk to toss a scoreless first inning.
The Mats got it going in the third after bunt singles by Garcia and Campa setup a Burgos RBI single. Cassandra Valle doubled home both runners.
Burgos added an RBI double in the fourth to push the lead to 6-0.
But the Gauchos began to chip away in the bottom of the fourth. Glendale struck for single runs in both the fourth and fifth.
The Matadors put some breathing room back into the lead in the sixth capitalizing on an infield error and Valle’s RBI double.
Despite a two run sixth and a run in the seventh for Glendale, Velasquez worked around a pair of unearned runs and five walks to make the 9-5 score hold up for the Matadors 30th win of the season.
Burgos finished the day 8-9 with 5 RBI to pace the Matadors while Garcia scored 6 times.
Velasquez improves to 11-0 while the Matadors jump to 30-2 on the season, 21-1 in conference play. Glendale falls to 16-12 overall and 11-11 in the ACCAC.
The Lady Mats return home on Saturday to host the South Mountain Cougars on Charlie Dine Field in Yuma for two games beginning at Noon.
