SB: Back on Track with Sweep of Scottsdale

YUMA, Ariz. –Despite a busy week with six games on three dates, the 6th Ranked Arizona Western Lady Matadors (21-6 overall, 14-4 ACCAC) finished the week strong with a double-header sweep of the Scottsdale Fighting Artichokes (1-11 overall, 1-11 ACCAC) Saturday afternoon at Charlie Dine Field.

Anahi Grijalva continued her terrific freshman campaign with her second consecutive game with at least ten strikeouts. Grijalva shutdown the Artichokes and surrendered just two baserunners in a complete game shutout.

Four different Matadors had RBI in the game to support the terrific effort in the circle with the Lady Matadors striking for two runs in the first, a run in the third, and two in the fifth.

Cassandra Valle’s solo homer in the third was her second of the year and helped widen the lead at the time.

The win is Grijalva’s 12th on the season putting her third in the entire NJCAA.

In game two, the Matadors struck for three early runs in the first two innings with Valle producing two more RBI and four total on the day.

But it was Freshman and Yuma Native Cielo Echols that sealed the win wrapping up a perfect 3-3 game with a two-run single in the fifth to clinch the eight-run rule.

Starter McKenzie Gray tossed five innings without allowing an earn run while scattering five hits and not issuing a single walk to earn her ninth win of the year.

Arizona Western is scheduled for a pair of home games on Tuesday against the #1 DII team in the NJCAA, Phoenix College. The double-header would begin at noon and be available on AWC TV. There is a 50% chance of rain for Tuesday, so a decision on the schedule will be made in the next 48 hours.

Arizona Western College is one of the top community colleges in Arizona. The college boasts partnerships with all three state universities that include face-to-face classes in Yuma.
