PRESCOTT, Ariz---In a game fitting of the Region I Playoffs, the Arizona Western Matadors advanced to the winner's bracket of the three-day tournament with a 5-4 win over Central Arizona Thursday afternoon at Bill Valley Field on the campus of host Yavapai College.

Weathering some defensive miscues throughout, the Matadors capitalized on some Central mistakes

McKenzie Gray tossed a solid top of the first for the Matadors giving AWC a chance at an early lead.

A pair of errors by Central in the top of the first was enough to get AWC an early 1-0 lead, bringing Josie Hernandez-who reached on the first error of the inning and scored on the second-home.

But a Matador error in the top of the second prolonged the inning for Danielle Farinas' two run triple that put the Vaqueras up a 2-1.

The Matadors would regain the lead in the bottom of the third on an Angela Oros two-run homer with two outs, making it 3-2.

A sacrifice fly from Central tied the game in the top of the fourth but AWC went back in front one more time in the bottom of the inning on three straight singles from Sadie Chavez, Cielo Echols and the run producing knock from Chloe Garcia.

After a two out double in the top of the fifth for Central, another Matador error brought home the tying run again making it even at 4-4 heading into the bottom of the fifth.

Iliana Manzano's two out frozen rope into left center scored Hernandez in the bottom of the fifth to give the Matadors a lead they would not relinquish.

Anahi Grijalva came on to record the final six outs in the circle for AWC, nailing the save and the win in a 5-4 contest.

Arizona Western will now look to the host Yavapai RoughRiders for a 1:00pm winner's bracket game Friday afternoon in Prescott.
