Matadors Advance to Region Championship
|Arizona Western College||2|
|Eastern Arizona College||3|
|Arizona Western College||12|
PRESCOTT, Ariz---A day that started poorly still ended with the Arizona Western Matadors accomplishing their goal for the day by advancing to the Region I Championship on Saturday.
After losing to the red-hot Yavapai RoughRiders in the 1:00pm game 14-2, the Lady Matadors bounced back behind McKenzie Gray in Game 2's 12-3 elimination of the Eastern Arizona Gila Monsters.
EAC had pulled a little magic of their own to bounce Central Arizona in the first game of the day, but the Matadors were quick to stomp out any more upset hopes after the Gila Monsters took a 2-1 lead into the third.
Six runs in the third and five in the fifth provided enough to get the run-rule victory as Iliana Manzano and Angela Oros continued to swing hot bats in Prescott.
Oros was 2-3 with her second homer in as many days while Manzano was 3-3 with her second homer on the day.
McKenzie Gray settled in after allowing two runs in the first inning holding EAC to just one run the rest of the game.
Arizona Western will return to the Region I Championship game, the first time its being held since they won it in 2019, in the same position they were in--needing two wins on Saturday to advance to the NJCAA National Championship.
But this time the Matadors will not have the home field advantage as they will have to take on the #9 Yavapai RoughRiders who have won 18 in a row dating back to April 6th.
The first game begins at 12:00pm and will be streamed through Yavapai's Radio Station, KYCA
