Lady Matadors swept in doubleheader by Yavapai

YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western College Lady Matadors (12-34, 7-31) lost a pair of games to Yavapai (47-2, 39-1) 10-1 and 7-2 on Thursday afternoon in Prescott, Ariz.
The Lady Matadors were held to five hits in the opener as Yavapai put together three innings of three or more runs to take game one 10-1.
Yavapai opened the scoring in the first inning, scoring three runs to grab a 3-0 lead before the Lady Matadors scored a run in the top of the second inning thanks to a Vivian Guevara single to cut the Roughriders’ lead to 3-1.
Yavapai would score the next seven runs of the game, scoring four runs in the fourth inning before adding three more in the fourth on their way to a 10-1 win in five innings.
Desiree Moran led the Lady Matadors with two hits, finishing the game 2-for-3 with a double while Guevara went 1-for-2 with an RBI. Jocelynn Hernandez and Kimberly Valenzuela each went 1-for-2 in the loss.
The Lady Matadors fell behind early in game two and were able to cut the deficit to two runs but were unable to avoid the sweep, falling 7-2.
Yavapai loaded the bases in the first inning but Lady Matadors’ starting pitcher Zamara Gutierrez was able to limit the damage, holding the Roughriders to a single run to take a 1-0 lead.
The Roughriders opened the lead up in the second inning, scoring three runs to extend their advantage to 4-0.
The Lady Matadors were able to cut the deficit in half to 4-2 thanks to a pair of runs in the fifth inning on RBI hit from Abigail Ibarra and Angela Oros.
Yavapai would get those runs back and another with a three-run fifth inning to pull away for the 7-2 win.
Ibarra finished the game with a pair of hits, going 2-for-3 with an RBI in the loss.
The Lady Matadors are back in action on Tuesday, hosting Central Arizona in a doubleheader beginning at noon at Charlie Dine Softball Field for sophomore day.
