TUCSON, Ariz---McKenzie Gray tossed seven innings worth of one run ball but the Arizona Western Matadors (24-11 overall, 12-6 ACCAC) came up with split results in a double-header Saturday afternoon against the Pima Aztecs (8-10 overall, 8-10 ACCAC).
The Matadors staked themselves out to an early 2-0 lead before Pima took the lead in the bottom of the third, chasing Anahi Grijalva after just three innings of work.
But McKenzie Gray entered and quieted the Pima bats allowing Arizona Western's offense to find its stride.
The Matadors struck in the fifth when Angela Oros cracked a two-run homer to regain the lead and Brianna Amparano doubled home Sadie Chavez putting AWC up 5-3.
After Pima pulled within a run, the Matadors added three more insurance runs in the seventh capped by Christina Robles' two run single and the AWC win held up at 8-4.
Gray earned her tenth win of the season, allowing just the one run in four innings of relief.
The Matadors jumped out to another lead in the top of the first in game two, but responded with two runs of their own to tie the game in the bottom of the inning against starter Kelly Katalbas.
After AWC struck for a run in the second to regain the lead, Pima delivered a four run inning that included a three-run homer to take the lead.
Gray came back out for AWC in game two, holding Pima scoreless for the final 3.2 innings, but the Matador offense could not muster any more runs before falling 6-3 in game two.
Arizona Western will return to Yuma this week for a pair of important ACCAC contests hosting Eastern Arizona on Tuesday and Central Arizona on Saturday.
