YUMA, Ariz---Chloe Garcia delivered the only two runs of game two as the Arizona Western Matadors (25-12 overall, 13-7 ACCAC) salvaged a split with the Eastern Arizona Gila Monsters (17-18 overall, 12-10 ACCAC) Tuesday afternoon at Charlie Dine Field.

As has been the case during April, the Matador pitching staff was solid with McKenzie Gray allowing just one run in the first seven innings of her game one start and Anahi Grijalva followed up the performance with a complete game shutout in game two.

But the Matador offense struggled to cash in opportunities despite grabbing early leads.

Nylze Salazar roped a double in the second inning to score Nicole Moran and give AWC a 1-0 lead. They would have that advantage until the top of the fourth when Eastern tied the game on Kayla Lunar's RBI single after a Matador error.

The game remained tied at one into extra innings, and Taylor Murphy's lead-off single to start the eighth score the runner stationed on second because of the tie-breaker rule. Eastern would plate Murphy later in the inning.

Sadie Chavez delivered a two-out knock to pull the Matador within one, but Salazar's fly ball one hitter later landed shy of the warning track and into the glove of the Eastern centerfielder Gabby Romero to end the game at 3-2 in favor of the Gila Monsters.

After Grijalva began mowing down EAC's hitters in the first two innings, her battery mate Garcia belted her fifth homer of the year in the bottom of the second to give AWC an early lead.

That would be all Grijalva would need as the right-hander struck out seven in a complete game effort, backed by another Garcia RBI, this time on a single, to double the Matador advantage.

AWC closed out the 2-0 behind Grijalva over the final three innings.

Arizona Western will be back at home at Charlie Dine Field on Saturday hosting Central Arizona for a double-header beginning at Noon.
