PRESCOTT, Ariz. – An early hole proved to be too much for the Arizona Western College softball team in the elimination game at the Region I Tournament. The Lady Mats (40-21) fell behind after two innings before falling 11-3 to Central Arizona (37-24) in five innings and were eliminated from the playoffs.
Central scored one run in the first inning to take the early lead, but it was the second inning that hurt the Lady Mats. CAC plated five to take a 6-0 lead.
After Central pushed the lead to 7-0 through three innings, AWC got on the board in the bottom of the fourth. Danielle Burgos walked, and Michelle Roldan hit a home run to cut the lead to 7-2. It was her second homer of the year.
Central added four more in the fifth to go up 11-2. Kiya Thomas hit a two-run home run in that stretch.
Allison Betty swatted a solo homer with two outs in the bottom of the fifth to cut the Central Arizona lead to 11-3. It was her eighth homer of the year.
Makenna Stram (21-11) took the loss in the circle. She pitched the first 1.1 innings and walked three after also pitching all seven innings against Eastern Arizona in the morning.. Kanani Vizcarra came on in relief and finished the game.
The Lady Matadors made their fourth playoff appearance in five seasons this year. Allison Betty and Makenna Stram were both named to the All-Conference teams after the regular season.
