Mats Run Ends in Thatcher at Region I Final

THATCHER, Ariz---A spirited run came up just short in the second half as the Arizona Western Lady Matadors (6-9 overall) fell 56-47 to the Eastern Arizona Gila Monsters (16-2 overall) in the Region I Final Friday night at Gitteau Gymnasium.

The Cinderella Act was gaining steam just two days removed from a road upset over Central Arizona. The Mats were also one of just two teams to defeat the Gila Monsters this season.

Pitocchi Nets the Difference in Win Over CGCC

YUMA, Ariz---Leonardo Pitocchi' 41st minute finish on a cross from Romaric Berneron set the Arizona Western Matadors (3-1 overall, 2-0 ACCAC) to a 1-0 lead they would not relinquish against the Chandler-Gilbert Coyotes (1-1 overall, 1-1 ACCAC) Thursday night.

The Matadors had a majority of the chances with the Coyotes seldom even breaking through the backline of the AWC defense.

Matadors Split a Pair of Slugfests

YUMA, Ariz---Seven home runs were only enough for a split as the Arizona Western Matadors (21-9 overall, 13-7 ACCAC) took the first game 12-1 over Mesa before falling 13-5 in the late contest Thursday afternoon at Kammann Field.

Bobby Vath was the first pitcher to avoid the long ball, en route to his fifth win of the year.

But Mesa scored first in both games, utilizing free passes for early advantages.

COOLIDGE, Ariz---Mizha Gilberto's three in the final minute net the Arizona Western Lady Matadors (6-8 overall) their first lead since midway through the third quarter, en route to knocking out the Central Arizona Vaqueras (7-4 overall) 65-64 in the Region I Semifinal Tuesday night at Central Arizona College.
