YUMA, Ariz. – Thursday afternoon, the Arizona Western College men’s soccer team kept the pressure on against Mesa Community College. AWC (8-1-1 overall, 8-1-1 Arizona Community College Athletic Conference) pulled away after halftime to win 4-1 over Mesa (4-5-1 overall, 4-5-1 ACCAC). The Mats remain perfect at home.
AWC never trailed. Nemanja Zivanovic slotted home an early goal in the ninth minute. Daniel Vazquez crossed it into the box, and Zivanovic was able to settle and shoot. It was his third goal of the season.
Mesa equalized on a corner a few minutes later. Moises Durazo was at the near post and flipped it past AWCs goalkeeper to tie it 1-1 in the 14th minute. Jesus Garcia took the corner.
The score stayed 1-1 for the next 25 minutes. Jorge Cayo Zelada broke the tie with a monster smash from the top of the box that dipped under the crossbar. Yerry Mendez weaved through the defense before finding Cayo Zelada on the move to pick up the assist. It was Cayo Zelada’s fourth goal of the season.
After halftime, AWC dominated possession and controlled the pace of play. In the 70th minute, AWC earned a free kick. Cayo Zelada curled a ball into the box, and Milos Blagojevic punched it in for his first goal of the season and a 3-1 lead.
Yerry Mendez knocked home a short cross from Steve Mendoza to wrap up the scoring in the 78th minue. He had time to take one touch and line up the shot for his seventh goal of the year.
AWC heads to Pima on Saturday to start the second half of the season. Kickoff is at 4:30 p.m.
