YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western men’s soccer team stayed put in the latest NJCAA poll as the Mats held onto the ninth spot for the second straight week. This is the fourth straight week the team has been in the top 10.
The Mats (11-1-3 overall) picked up a pair of wins last week beginning with a 2-0 win over GateWay. AWC outshot the Geckos 25-2 in the contest and controlled the possession all night in Yuma. On Saturday, the Mats won 4-2 at Mesa on the road.
Arizona Western has been in the NJCAA top 20 all season. AWC started 15th in the preseason poll. After sliding to 18th in the first poll of the season, the Mats moved to 15th for two weeks and 10th for two weeks. Last week, the team was ranked ninth.
The Matadors are one of an impressive four ranked teams from the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference. Pima (12-1-3 overall) is seventh, Yavapai (13-2-3 overall) is 10th, and Phoenix (10-2-4 overall) is 13th.
Four of the top five stayed the same from last week, with St. Louis (15-0-0 overall) first, Monroe (10-0-1 overall) second and Schoolcraft (11-0-0 overall) third. Tyler (11-2-0) moved into fourth, and Indian Hills (12-1-0) is fifth.
The Mats are headed to Phoenix College for an important match tonight at 7:00 p.m. The two teams tied 0-0 earlier in the year in Yuma.
Arizona Western College is one of the top community colleges in Arizona. The college boasts partnerships with all three state universities that include face-to-face classes in Yuma. AWC leads the state in enrollment growth over the past 10 years and handed out more than 2,300 certificates and degrees in 2016-17.
