YUMA, Ariz. – For the first time this season, the Arizona Western men’s soccer team lost two matches in a row. Both came on the road, and the Mats dropped in the latest NJCAA poll down to 14th this week.
The Mats went 1-2 last week as the regular season starts to wind down. After losing to Phoenix (now 13th) 3-1 on the road and 2-0 at Scottsdale, the Matador men picked themselves up with a 6-0 win over Paradise Valley on Saturday. Juan Arango led the way with three goals and an assist.
AWC (12-3-3 overall, 12-3-3 Arizona Community College Athletic Conference) is right in the thick of the playoff race in the ACCAC. With two matches left in the regular season, the Mats are two points behind Phoenix for third and three points behind Yavapai for second (wins are worth three points while ties count for one).
Four teams from the ACCAC are ranked in the poll. Pima is fifth, and Yavapai is seventh. Phoenix, at 13, is one spot ahead of AWC. St. Louis (17-0-0). Schoolcraft (11-0-0), Monroe (10-0-2) and Tyler (14-2) make up the top four.
The Mats are headed to Yavapai this evening. Kick-off is set for 6:00 p.m. in Prescott. AWC will close the regular season at home against Pima on Thursday.
Arizona Western College is one of the top community colleges in Arizona. The college boasts partnerships with all three state universities that include face-to-face classes in Yuma. AWC leads the state in enrollment growth over the past 10 years and handed out more than 2,300 certificates and degrees in 2016-17.
