YUMA, Ariz--- The Arizona Western College Matadors (10-3-3 overall, 5-1-2 ACCAC) were cooled off by the Yavapai RoughRider's (13-3 overall, 6-2 ACCAC) pair of second half goals ending the Mats home unbeaten streak Thursday night at the Matador Soccer Field.
While looking to rebound after a road loss on Saturday, the Matadors faced more scoring woes in the first half. The Matadors had good position and a handful of chances in the first half but could not find the back of the net. The Roughriders, equally, could not score on their lone opportunity against Duro Dragicevic, leaving the first half at 0-0.
Five minutes into the second half Yavapai capatalized on a ball that rattled around in the box before Tucker Fenton hammered it into the net. The Matadors asked for an offsides call, but dispite the officials conferring, the goal was allowed for a 1-0 Yavapai advantage.
Two minutes later the Roughriders seized the momentum when Fenton beat a Matadors defender to get the cross to the far post and to the feet of Enrique Zamora to extend the lead 2-0.
That would prove to be enough for Yavapai as keeper Logan Rabasca completed the clean sheet, including an impressive leaping save on Elwyn Asiedu's bending strike that was punched out for a corner.
In all the Mats had 11 corner kicks but could not finish any off the chances against Rabasca.
The Matadors continue conference play in an increasingly important match for, playoff positioning, on Saturday, October 19 at Scottsdale Community College in Scottsdale Arizona.
Arizona Western College is one of the top community colleges in Arizona. The college boasts partnerships with all three state universities that include face-to-face classes in Yuma.
