YUMA, Ariz---After failing to score in the first 89 minutes of the match, the Arizona Western College Matadors (10-2-2 overall, 5-0-1 ACCAC) used a diving header with less than 13 seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime, ultimately fighting to a draw with the Chandler-Gilbert Coyotes (8-4-2 overall, 3-2-2 ACCAC) Thursday evening.
The Coyotes took the fight to the Matadors in a grueling, physical contest that produced its share of odd situations. While the Matadors were called for more fouls, there were three yellow cards issued against the Coyotes, none against AWC.
Mikey Johonsson broke through the sludge in the 37th minute by whistling a shot past the Matador keeper Duro Dragicevic to give the Coyotes a 1-0 lead.
The Matadors attempted to catch up for the rest of regulation. Arizona Western produced a number of corners including one with 25 seconds remaining. Ridwane Boukraa's low cross was returned by the CGCC defense and Boukraa opted to lob his second attempt high on the far side to the top of the box. With nothing left to hold back, the Matadors brough Dragicevic up on the kick and he was on the receiving end of Boukraa's second try. Dragicevic headed it back to the other post where Michele Signorelli made a diving header that bounced off of Paul Riedel, the Coyote keeper and into the side of the net with 12.5 seconds to spare.
With energy spent, both teams battled through a pair of ten minute overtimes to finish in a draw. The Matadors remain unbeaten in conference play but will have another tough test when they travel to Mesa to take on the Thunderbirds Saturday night at 7:00pm.
