MESA, Ariz---Two goals separated by less than 90 seconds jumped the Mesa Thunderbirds (9-6 overall, 4-4 ACCAC) in front of the Arizona Western Matadors (10-3-2 overall, 5-1-1 ACCAC) for good, as Mesa stopped the Matadors seven-match unbeaten stretch Saturday night.
The Matadors are saddled with their first conference loss in the 3-1 defeat.
Nabil Laroussi scored 26 minutes in for the Thunderbirds before Jesus Garcia struck 70 seconds later.
Andres Hernandez, who assisted on the Laroussi goal, improved Mesa's lead to 3-0 less than ten minutes into the second half.
The Matadors avoided the shutout when Michele Signorelli scored, for the second straight game, in the 74th minute on an assist from Rhys Darrington.
The loss drops the Matadors back into a tie atop the ACCAC standings with Pima, whom the Matadors see in the final match of the season.
AWC will have two matches before that, beginning with Sophomore Night against the Yavapai Roughriders at 7:00pm on Thursday, October 17th.
