GLENDALE, Ariz---A goal in each half was enough to support a clean sheet as the Arizona Western Matadors (9-2-1 overall, 4-0 ACCAC) held off the Glendale Gauchos (1-10 overall, 1-4 ACCAC) Thursday afternoon.
Esteban Franco put home a Michael Nachforg pass to put the Matadors up 1-0 with less than ten minutes before the half.
AWC doubled the lead in the 55th minute when Ridwane Boukraa cashed in a penalty kick.
The Mats held the edge on chances, outshooting the Gauchos 8-4 and AWC created eight corner kicks despite scoring their chances in other ways.
It is the fifth straight win for Arizona Western who remains as one of two unbeatens, along with defending National Champion Pima Community College, in ACCAC play. The Matadors have presented three clean sheets in that stretch and scoring 22 goals over that same time frame.
The Matadors return home on Saturday evening to host the Phoenix College Bears at 7:00pm. Tickets can be purchased for $5, $3 for seniors, and free for students with I.D. The game will also be livestreamed via the Matador Athletic Facebook Page (@AWCMatadorAthletics).
Arizona Western College is one of the top community colleges in Arizona. The college boasts partnerships with all three state universities that include face-to-face classes in Yuma.
