SCOTTSDALE, Ariz---A two goal lead led to an important conference road-win for the Arizona Western Matadors (11-4-2 overall, 6-2-1 ACCAC) over the Scottsdale Fighting Artichokes (6-8 overall, 4-5 ACCAC) Saturday night.
Esteban Franco’s low cross was hammered past the Scottsdale Keeper by Michele Signorelli to give the Matadors the early Matador lead in the first half.
The Matadors added the insurance goal in the second half after Jesus Sanchez and Ridwane Boukraa played a combination to setup Boukraa in the box. Boukraa was fouled to draw the penalty kick which was cashed in by Boukraa.
Scottsdale got a goal back in the second half when Kamani Stewart scored to make the line 2-1.
But Arizona Western closed out the win to head into Wednesday’s regular season finale at Pima with 19 points. The Aztecs will also have a lot on the line as they are jockeying for first place with Yavapai.
The Mats will take on the Aztecs at 7:00pm on Wednesday in Tucson.
