YUMA, Ariz--- Jesus Chillon’s early goal was the difference for the Arizona Western Matadors' (9-2-1) in the crucial conference match against Phoenix College (9-4) Saturday night at the Matador Soccer Field.
Early pressure from the Matadors resulted in an early lead as Ridwane Boukraa played Jesus Chillon into the box. With the ball at his feet, Chillon then blasted a shot to the bottom corner of the net giving AWC the 1-0 lead.
But the early goal did not result in a shootout, instead it became more similar to a tug of war. Each team fought for field position and chances for set pieces with multiple yellow cards being issued to both sides for physical play.
One free kick at the start of the second half, setup the Bears just outside of the box. Niko Shumov ripped a shot destined for the top right corner of the net, but Duro Dragicevic made a lead-preserving save, leaping to his left and swiping the ball away from the goal to keep the Matador lead in tact.
Phoenix would have a handful of free-kicks just outside of the box as well as a few corners, but the Matadors' defense held tight to preserve the clean sheet.
Arizona Western runs its winning streak to six games, remaining undefeated in the ACCAC.
The Matadors are home on Thursday evening hosting the Chandler-Gilbert Community College Coyotes at 7:00pm. Tickets can be purchased for $5, $3 for seniors, and free for students with I.D. The game will also be livestreamed via the Matador Athletic Facebook Page (@AWCMatadorAthletics).
