Mats Wrap Homestand vs. SMCC

YUMA, Ariz---The Arizona Western College Matadors (1-1-1) wrap up their first homestand of the season with a non-conference tilt against ACCAC foe South Mountain (0-3-0) Thursday evening at 7:00pm on the Matador Soccer Field.

The Matadors earned their first win of the season on Saturday in another non-conference match against an ACCAC foe, beating Paradise Valley 3-1.  The 2019 schedule is new to the ACCAC in limiting the total games on the student athletes and many of the Matadors non-conference matches actually will give them familiarity when it comes to the conference schedule.

Michele Signorelli involved himself on all three of the Matadors goals of the season on Saturday. Signorelli scored twice and assisted on the final tally, proving to be the difference in their first win of the season. Meanwhile, the Matador defense has been excellent through the first three games allowing just two goals while keepers Duro Dragicevic and Gianni Honsel have combined for 18 saves. That number could even be higher, but the defense in front of them has been solid, only allowing ten total shots in the first two contests that went a combined 218 minutes (2OT both matches).

Their foe, South Mountain, is off to a slow start having been outscored 21-0 in their first three contests. Their goalkeepers, however, have been tested heavily already logging an impressive 28 saves.  They are looking for some relief from their defense to take the pressure off of the goalies as well as still being in search of their first goal of the season.

Tickets are just $5 for the game, students enter free with I.D. The game is scheduled to start at 7:00pm, or approximately 20 minutes following the conclusion of the women’s game. Both games will be streamed via Facebook Live @AWCMatadorAthletics.

Arizona Western College is one of the top community colleges in Arizona. The college boasts partnerships with all three state universities that include face-to-face classes in Yuma.
