Mats continue winning streak with shutout game

YUMA, Ariz--- The #8 Arizona Western Matadors (11-0 overall, 4-0 ACCAC) reach 11 straight wins so far for the year after their 5-0 triumph over the Chandler-Gilbert Coyotes (0-7 overall, 0-5 ACCAC) on Saturday night at Matador Soccer Field.
Despite numerous shots on goal, the game remained scoreless until about 9 minutes to the half when Jesus Sanchez scored the first point of the night with an assist from Federico Caronte. Then, with about three minutes until halftime, Sanchez scored again with an assist from Hugo Catherine, bringing the game 2-0.
The second half saw two back-to-back goals by Michael Appiah, assisted by Hugo Catherine and Erick Mejia, as well as a final goal by Hirotaka Sugishita with Aghiles Ould Lamara on the assist.
AWC had a total of 20 shots on goal, 14 corner kicks, and five fouls for the night, while Chandler-Gilbert had one shot on goal, 12 saves, one corner kick, and six fouls.
Next, the Mats will be traveling to face off against the Mesa Thunderbirds at John D. Riggs Stadium on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
