Matadors win third in a row, beat Imperial Valley 10-0

YUMA, Ariz. – The No. 10 ranked Arizona Western Matadors men’s soccer team (4-1) won their third consecutive game beating Imperial Valley College (0-3) 10-0 on Tuesday evening at Matador Soccer Field.

The Matadors opened the scoring in the 11th minute when Terry Makedika gave the Matadors an early lead with a strike from outside the box into the top corner for the first goal of his collegiate career. Paolo Grizzetti didn’t waste any time doubling the lead, scoring two minutes later as a loose ball fell to his foot in the box, beating the keeper to push the AWC advantage to 2-0.

Grizzetti put together his first career two-goal game, extending the Matadors’ lead to 3-0 as he took a cross from Peter Yaro and beat the keeper at the near post with a shot from the right foot for his second goal of the game in the 16th minute.

Arizona Western made it a 4-0 advantage in the 23rd minute when Luis Ortner stepped onto the pitch as a substitute and was able to get a foot on a cross from Jin Inoue, poking the ball past the keeper for his second of the season.

The Matadors added their fifth goal of the game in the 52nd minute as Logan Allard was able to sneak into the box and beat the keeper at the near post for his first goal of the season, extending the lead to 5-0.

Eduardo Noriega would score his first career goal in the 65th minute on a cross from Alvaro Hormigos pushing the lead to 6-0. Allard extended the lead to 7-0 in the 61st minute, heading in a Hormigos cross for his second goal of the game.

After a pair of assists, Hormigos would add a goal to his line, finishing off a pass from Blaine Watkins to extend the lead to 8-0 in the 60th minute. Shoki Yoshida scored his second goal of the season, scoring from the left foot to push the lead to 9-0 in the 78th minute before Inoue added the 10th goal in the 79th minute.

The Matadors will be back at home on Saturday, September 10 when they host South Mountain at 4:30 pm at Matadors Soccer Field in the Region I opener. Tickets are $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for seniors. Arizona Western College students get in free with AWC ID.
