LAS VEGAS, Nev – What seemed like a slow start while down at multiple points early in the match, quickly turned into a comfortable opening season showing as the Arizona Western Matadors (1-0 overall) knocked off the Southern Nevada Coyotes (0-1 overall) 5-2 Sunday afternoon at Heritage Park.

Lachlan Brooks and Ridwane Boukraa were central figures in both possession and finishing for the Matadors in their season opening win.

But what ended as a positive result, was in doubt early on.

After a couple of saves from Matador keeper Atsuki Sato, the Southern Nevada Coyotes broke through in the 25th minute as Christopher Bramasco got behind the backline of AWC and snuck a shot into the net to give CSN the 1-0 lead.

But seven minutes later the Matadors created a chance when Jin Inoue drew a foul inside the 18 to earn the penalty kick.

Captain Romaric Berneron cashed in the chance to level the match at 1-1.

A potential go ahead goal for the Matadors five minutes was disallowed on a handball call, negating a clean strike from Nozomu Kamei.

CSN regained the lead in the 60th minute after a failed Matador corner led to an opportunity for the Coyotes and after an initial save by Sato, the rebound was tapped in to make it 2-1.

But the Matadors responded quickly, as just seven minutes later, Ridwane Boukraa delivered a beautiful through ball to Lachlan Brooks who beat the keeper and tapped in the equalizer.

The Boukraa-Brooks combination worked to put the Matadors the lead in the 77th minute when Boukraa found Brooks in space setting up a rocket inside the far post to give AWC its first lead of the match at 3-2.

The Matadors added the insurance goal in the 81st minute as Boukraa’s free-kick deflected off of the keeper and bounced to a wide open Francois Geris-Rey who cashed in the fourth goal of the match for AWC.

The Matadors conclude the three day-three game trip with their first win in their first official contest. They will return home on Tuesday for a scrimmage against Justice College at 7:00pm on the Matador Soccer Field and then begin their non-conference slate against Glendale College on Saturday August 28th at 7:00pm. That match will be livestreamed on the Matador Athletics Facebook page.

Brooks then setup an additional goal in the 84th minute, teeing up a wide open Hugo Catherine who ripped one past the keeper for a 5-2 advantage.

Arizona Western College is one of the top community colleges in Arizona. The college boasts partnerships with all three state universities that include face-to-face classes in Yuma.
