Matadors heading to national championship game with 2-0 win over Salt Lake
TYLER, TX - A pair of first-half goals helped the Arizona Western Matadors (21-1-0) to a 2-0 win over Salt Lake (19-1-0) on Friday afternoon to advance to the NJCAA DI Men's Championship final.
Arizona Western won its 21st game of the season and advanced to the national championship game for the first time in program history, beating the No. 1 seed Salt Lake.
The Matadors wasted little time, opening the scoring in the fourth minute when Michele Signorelli was able to tap the ball past the keeper off a corner kick from Hugo Catherine, giving the Matadors the 1-0 advantage.
Arizona Western's backline was tested in the first half as Salt Lake put four shots on target, all saved by Matadors' keeper Atsuki Sato.
Haruki Nishimura doubled the Matadors' lead in the 22nd minute, splitting a pair of defenders and putting a ball past the keeper at the near post to push the lead to 2-0.
The Matadors spent most of the second half defending as the Bruins controlled possession but only produced one shot on goal in the second half.
Arizona Western will face the winner of the Iowa Western/Tyler game Saturday, November 20 at 5:00 pm (MST) in the NJCAA DI Men's Championship final.
