Matadors advance to national semi-finals with 3-2 win over Cowley

TYLER, TX – The Arizona Western College Matadors (20-1-0) advanced to the NJCAA DI Men’s Soccer Championships semi-finals for the first time in program history with a 3-2 win over Cowley (18-1-0) on Wednesday afternoon.

The Matadors wasted little time, opening the scoring in the 4th minute thanks to Romaric Berneron who beat the keeper with a free-kick to give the Mats a 1-0 lead.

Cowley controlled possession in the first half and created the majority of the chances but the Matadors’ backline held strong, keeping the Tigers off the board.

Hugo Catherine doubled the lead for the Matadors in the 36th minute, putting a ball past the keeper off a cross from Jesus Sanchez, pushing the lead to 2-0.

Cowley came out in the second half and scored two quick goals in the 48th and 52nd minute to tie the game a two.

The Matadors put the would-be game-winning goal in the net in the 60th minute thanks Ridwane Boukraa who put a ball in the top right corner on a free-kick, putting the Matadors back in front, 3-2.

The Matadors will wait to see who and when they will play on Friday in the national semi-finals in Tyler, Texas.
