YUMA, Ariz. – Make plays. Score goals. Yerry Mendez did both for the Arizona Western College men’s soccer team last week, and the freshman was named the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference Player of the Week for his work. He helped AWC go 2-1 in three matches with four goals and an assist.
Mendez powered an incredible comeback against Yavapai last Tuesday. AWC trailed 3-0 at the half, but Mendez was unstoppable in front of the goal in the second half. He scored three of the team’s four goals, including the game winner in the 79th minute to cap a furious final 45 minutes.
In a 4-1 win over Mesa, Mendez added one goal and an assist as Arizona Western kept pressure on the Thunderbirds all match long. The Mats fell 2-1 on the road at Pima on Saturday.
On the season, Mendez has a team-high seven goals, and his three assists are part of a four-way tie for the team lead. He has scored or assisted on a goal in seven of the nine matches he has played.
Mendez is the second player to earn a weekly award for Matador soccer. Goalkeeper Heriberto Ruiz was named the Keeper of the Week on September 5.
