YUMA, Ariz. – The final score was only 4-0, but the Arizona Western College men’s soccer team (9-2-1 overall, 9-2-1 Arizona Community College Athletic Conference) dominated from start to finish on Tuesday night against GateWay Community College (0-12 overall, 0-12 ACCAC). The Mats only gave up one shot on goal and fired 15 shots on target in the win.
In the eighth minute, AWC’s Arturo Ledezma found space and blasted one on net that GWCC’s Manuel Melendrez saved. Alex Avila gobbled up the rebound and smashed it in for a 1-0 lead. It was his third goal of the season.
Michael Adeyeye pushed the Matador lead to 2-0 in the 22nd minute. Daniel Vazquez fed him a low cross, and Adeyeye drove it straight in from inside the six-yard box. It was his first goal of the season.
After halftime, AWC kept the pressure on. Steve Mendoza and Yerry Mendez combined for a quick give-and-go on the counter. Mendoza capped it off by slipping it under the keeper for a 3-0 lead in the 58th minute. He has three goals this season.
AWC squandered multiple chances in the next 15 minutes, but they kept hammering away. Victor Leon ripped a huge shot from straightaway that was knocked down by an errant hand in the penalty box, and Leon buried the penalty kick. His first goal of the season put AWC up 4-0 in the 77th minute.
The Mats are headed to Chandler-Gilbert on Saturday afternoon. Kickoff is at 4:30 p.m.
