Appiah's Goal Keeps Mats Unbeaten
|Arizona Western College||4|
PHOENIX, ARIZ---While it always seems to be an instant classic any time the two teams lock up, the Arizona Western Matadors (3-0-0 overall) remained unbeaten in non-conference action, slogging through the pouring rain in double-overtime before Michael Appiah notched the golden goal to beat Phoenix College (0-2-0 overall) 4-3 Tuesday night at Hogan Field.
Throughout a constantly rainy match, the Matadors battled sloppiness of play and of field conditions, finding themselves down 1-0 in the first thirteen minutes.
But Michele Signorelli cashed in a penalty and Burak Cuban headed home a Romaric Berneron corner to give the Matadors a 2-1 lead at the half.
Phoenix pulled even with just under a half hour remaining in regulation before AWC's Sam Oliver drove a ball into the back of the net with ten minutes left, regaining the lead for the Matadors.
But Phoenix snuffed out the momentum with seven second left to send the game to overtime on a cross headed in.
The match continued through the first fifteen minutes of overtime before Ridwane Boukraa crossed a ball in front of the net that Appiah tapped in for the golden goal.
Arizona Western remains unbeaten in its first three non-conference matches but will continue on the road Saturday when they travel to Chandler-Gilbert.
The Matadors did drop a game off of their conference schedule Wednesday morning, as South Mountain announced it will not compete in Men's or Women's Soccer, removing AWC's schedule conference opener.
