YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western College men’s basketball team is ranked 17th in the preseason NJCAA poll. The ranking is the team’s highest preseason ranking under head coach Charles Harral. Northwest Florida State, South Plains, Southern Idaho, Coffeyville and Eastern Florida State make up the top five.
AWC won the Region I Tournament last year by beating Cochise 74-63 in Yuma. The team came up one possession short against Salt Lake in the District Final with an NJCAA National Tournament berth on the line.
This year, the Mats have an experienced frontcourt (Marvin Mapaga, Andre Allen) back along with leading scorer Alfonso Plummer. They open up the season on the road at a tournament at the City College of San Francisco this weekend.
AWC is the only team from the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference in the Division I top 25. In Division II, Pima is ranked first, and Phoenix is ninth.
After starting on the road, the Mats are at home on November 13 for an exhibition against CETYS. Their home opener is on Friday, November 23 against New Mexico Military Institute at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are only $5 for adults and $3 for seniors/military.
