Sophomores help Matadors to ACCAC regular-season crown with 91-62 win over Vaqueros

YUMA, AZ – The Arizona Western Matadors (25-4, 18-2) claimed the ACCAC regular-season title, beating Central Arizona (17-12, 11-9) 91-62 on Tuesday night at the House Gymnasium.
Nate Duda led the way on sophomore night for the Matadors, scoring 22 points on 10-for-16 from the field as three Matadors finished in double-figures.
The Matadors started the game on a 9-0 run and would push the lead to 17-3 after a Najeeb Muhammad made three-pointer.
Muhammad finished the game with nine points and eight assists while Mojus Mojus finished as the Matadors' third-leading scorer with 18 points.
Central Arizona would go on a 6-0 run to cut the Matadors’ lead to 17-9 before the Mats would push the lead back out to 28-14 after an alley-oop from Duda to Yaxel Lendeborg. Lendeborg ended the game with eight points and hauled in 14 rebounds.
The Matadors took a 43-19 lead into the locker room before Central Arizona picked up the pace on offense, scoring 43 points in the second half and at one point, cutting the Matadors’ lead to 18.
Evan Butts ended the game as the Mats’ second-leading scorer, scoring 19 points, hitting five three-pointers.
The Matadors will host a Region I semi-final matchup on Saturday, February 26 at 7:00 pm at the House Gymnasium against Eastern Arizona.
