MBB:Slow Start Dooms Mat's Opener
EDMOND, Okla---A slow start found the Arizona Western Matadors (0-1) down by 19 points at the half as the Odessa Wranglers (1-0) came out shooting strong to drop the Mats 91-81 in the season opener at the Elite Eight tournament in Oklahoma Friday afternoon.
The Wranglers 14 point run midway through the opening half opened up a sizable lead as Odessa shot 62% from the field in the first.
Joel Kasperzyk paced a balanced Wranglers attack with 22 points while Tavon Jones and Tauriawn Knight each added fifteen points.
The Matadors were led by Jalen Townsell's 23 points on five three pointers. The Matadors fought back in the second half behind Townsell and Pharoh Allah, who added 22 points.
The Mats outscored Odessa by 9 in the second half to pull closer, despite trailing by as much as 26 in the second half..
AWC was outrebounded 34-21 but still held the edge in second-chance points at 10-9. While most other statistical categories were fairly even for the game, the Wranglers scored 27 points in transition while the Mats scored just 13.
The Matadors are back in action Saturday at 12:00pm (2:00pm CT) in Edmond, Oklahoma as they matchup with the Navarro (TX) Bulldogs.
