SCOTTSDALE, Ariz---High Scoring individiual performances piled up as the Arizona Western Matadors (13-6 overall, 7-4 ACCAC) could not overcome the conference leading and 14th ranked (Division II) Scottsdale Fighting Artichokes (17-2 overall, 9-2 ACCAC) Saturday afternoon at Scottsdale Community College.
Xavier Fuller, the third leading scorer in the conference, started hot as Scottsdale jumped out to a double-figure lead before the 10:00 mark in the first half. But Daniel Kiely helped scored 11 points to help pull Arizona Western even just before half.
With the game tied at 43, Riley Matticks was fouled shooting a three and knocked down two shots to give Scottsdale a 45-43 lead at the break.
Kiely continued his big game in the second half and was flanked by 18 points from Cash Williams and 16 from Jalen Townsell as the Matadors jockeyed back and forth down the stretch with Scottsdale. Townsell added 14 rebounds
The Artichokes recieved 20 more points from Boogie Anderson and the other three starters were all in double figures as the Artichokes pulled away in the last five minutes. Scottsdale's starters scored 88 of their 91 points and found enough variety to fend off a couple of late surges from the Mats.
Scottsdale shot over 50% from the field and was led by Fuller's 25 points and 11 rebounds to maintain their spot atop the ACCAC
The loss puts Arizona Western two games back of Scottsdale for the conference lead at the midway point in conference play. Arizona Western continues on the road Wednesday night at 7:30pm when they head to Coolidge to play Central Arizona.
