YUMA, Ariz. – Tenacious defense and big nights from all three sophomores playing in their final regular season home game for the Arizona Western Matadors amounted to a comfortable 85-72 victory over the Eastern Arizona Gila Monsters Saturday at The House.
Sophomore Andre Allen paced the Matadors with 23 points and 11 rebounds while fellow sophomore Alfonso Plummer chipped in 16 points and 10 rebounds as part of the Matadors racing out to as much as a 24 point lead.
Sophomore Marvin Mapaga added 13 points and 7 rebounds.
It was as much what Eastern couldn’t do, as what the Matadors did, because of stingy and aggressive defensive stops from Arizona Western.
The Gila Monsters were just 2 of 17 from three in the first half and held to 34% from the field.
Meanwhile, the Matadors received their typical balanced performance as freshman Cash Williams was second on the team with 19 points.
One thing that was atypical, however, was the Matadors shooting just 23% from three despite entering the evening atop the ACCAC in the category.
Regardless, the Matadors built the early lead and weathered an 8-0 run by the Gila Monsters late that pulled the game within single digits.
The Matadors improve to 21-8 on the season, 15-6 in the ACCAC. Eastern falls to 17-11 and 10-11 in the ACCAC.
