MBB: Mojus Leads in Mats OT win over CAC
COOLIDGE, Ariz. – The start of the conference season displayed a glimpse of how fierce ACCAC can be, as Arizona Western (2-0 Overall, 1-0 ACCAC) pulled away for a 96-87 Overtime win over Central Arizona (0-2 Overall, 0-1 ACCAC) Saturday night at the Central Arizona Gymnasium.
Mojus Mojus led the way for the Matadors with 28 points and hauled in 14 rebounds but was flanked in offense support as AWC hit ten total three’s.
The back and forth game saw Arizona Western build the largest lead of the game at just six in the second half, but Central’s Brenton Woods led a three-point barrage for the Vaquero’s connecting on four second-half triples.
It was Woods who tied the game at 76 with 4.2 seconds in regulation, blowing by everyone on his way to the basket.
But Leo Gerardo hit a pair of big three’s in the extra frame as Arizona Western outgunned Central for 20 points in the deciding five minutes.
Evan Butts continued his terrific start to his freshman campaign with 19 points. Freshman Yaxel Lendeborg was great in the post for AWC with 12 points and 11 boards. He was also credited with one block and one assist.
Arizona Western has a busy week of conference action. They are scheduled to host Cochise Tuesday night in Yuma before traveling to take on Eastern Arizona Friday and Pima on Saturday.
