PHOENIX, Ariz. – Efficient shooting up and down the lineup paved the way in a wire-to-wire in the Arizona Western College Matadors 99-89 victory over the Phoenix College Bears Saturday afternoon.
Alfonso Plummer torched the nets for 29 points thanks in part to six three-pointers while eight other Matadors had multiple baskets in win.
The Mats started fast behind Plummer who connected on his first three on the opening possession. Arizona Western would score the game’s first 7 points and lead 17-4 just minutes in.
Phoenix made its run behind Darius Goudeau midway through the first, tying the game at 30.
AWC never lost the lead, however, and regained a ten point advantage at the break by outscoring the Bears 24-14 over the final six minutes of the first half.
The Matadors received contributions up and down the lineup as Bryson Langdon added 19 points of his own. Cash Williams had 11, while Abderrahmane Hailouf had 9 and Andre Allen added 8.
Phoenix second half run again dipped into the Mats lead pulling the game to a three point margin before the Matadors pulled away.
The win is the 20th for the season marking the seventh time in the past eight years under Head Coach Charles Harral that the Matadors have reached the milestone.
The victory is also the first time since the 2012-13 season that the Matadors sweep the season series from the Bears.
With three-games remaining the Matadors will return to Yuma for two of them beginning on Wednesday night hosting Glendale. The women will start at 5:30pm and the men will play at 7:30pm. Tickets are only $5 for adults and $3 for seniors and military members. Children 12 and under and AWC students and staff (with current school ID) get in for FREE!
