Arizona Western stifled the top three-point team in the country in the first half and held on as the barrage came in the second to beat Snow College 93-79 Saturday night and capture the District Championship for the first time since 2006.
The win sends the Matadors to Hutchinson, Kansas to play in the NJCAA Tournament beginning on March 18. The selection show along with seeding information will be announced on Monday, March 11th at 9:30am MST here.
The Matadors got off to a fast start behind Alfonso Plummer and Bryson Langdon who each scored 16 points a piece in the first half. Both finished with 23 points.
Arizona Western’s defense was also aggressive holding Snow to 2 of 9 on three pointers and limiting them under 30% from the field in the first half.
Cash Williams and Marvin Mapaga each chimed in during the second half to finish in double figures.
Abderrahmane Hailof was an active prescense on the defensive end all night and registered three blocks,
16th ranked Snow showed their marksmenship in the second half rallying to shrink a 25 point deficit down to 9, but the Matadors held strong and hit 14 of 17 at the free throw line to close out their first District Title in 13 years.
Arizona Western has earned a trip to the NJCAA National Tournament beginning on March 18th in Hutchinson, Kansas. All Matador Tournament games will be broadcasted on 560 KBLU in Yuma.
