YUMA, Ariz---A fast start was bolstered by massive performances in the Arizona Western Matadors (13-5 overall, 7-3 ACCAC) 88-60 win over the Eastern Arizona Gila Monsters (15-3 overall, 7-3 ACCAC) Wednesday night at The House.
Gio Nelson scored 8 of the Matadors first 10 points and Cash Williams finished with a season-high 28 points as the Matadors rode to knock off the Division I leading Gila Monsters in a crucial ACCAC contest.
Aside from Nelson's penchant for finding the net, the Matadors smothered Eastern to start the game aside from a pair of three's from Anthony Anderson.
Nelson would put up 14 of the Mats' 39 first half points, but the lead widen behind Jalen Townsell's outside shot.
The Matadors removed doubt from the game in the second half as Williams took over from long range, connecting on four 3's. Arizona Western exploded for 49 points in the from while stifling Eastern. The lead balooned to 28 as all but one Matador scored.
Pharoh Allah still added five rebounds and was crucial in the early advantage.
Nelson was the only player in double-figures on the boars finishing with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
The win sets AWC in second place with the current advantage on Eastern Arizona heading into another key contest against Scottsdale on Saturday to close out the first half of conference place.
The game starts at 4:00pm in Scottsdale. The women will follow at 6:00pm. Both games will be livestreamed on the Matador facebook page.
