YUMA, Ariz. – A thirteen point lead was whittled down to just three before the Arizona Western College Matadors pulled away in 94-84 win over South Mountain Wednesday at The House.
The Matadors built the early lead on hot shooting from three, connecting on six of nine first half three-pointers. They added four more three’s in the second half, led by Alfonso Plummer’s 19 points while Cash Williams and Bryson Langdon added 16 and 14 points respectively.
The Cougars couldn’t match the Matadors fire power from the outside but hung tough by creating foul trouble, and getting to the free throw line where they connected on 21 of 30 attempts.
The foul trouble hampered the Mats’ balanced attack on inside from Marvin Mapaga and Abderrahmane Hailouf collecting offensive boards and finishing in the paint. Both fouled out in the closing minutes.
South Mountain pulled it within three in final five minutes before Arizona Western was able to close the game out at the line.
The Matadors improve to 19-7 on the year and 13-5 in ACCAC play, having won three in a row. South Mountain falls to 10-16 and 5-13 in ACCAC play, losing their fourth straight.
The Mats hit the road Saturday to take on the Phoenix College Bears in Phoenix at 4pm. The women’s game begins before at 2pm. Both games can be heard on the radio in Yuma on AM 560 KBLU.
Arizona Western College is one of the top community colleges in Arizona. The college boasts partnerships with all three state universities that include face-to-face classes in Yuma.
