MBB: Eastern's Late Bucket Blemishes #18 AWC
THATCHER, Ariz---While the #18 Arizona Western Matadors (4-1 overall, 3-1 ACCAC) almost made it through a unique three-game week unscathed, a late bucket from the Eastern Arizona Gila Monsters (1-1 overall, 1-1 ACCAC) handed AWC its first loss of the year 67-66 Saturday afternoon at Gitteau Gymnasium.
Najeeb Muhammad led the way with 17 points and 6 assists for the Matadors, but an unusual string of turnovers hampered the offense in the first half.
The Matadors turned it on with the their typical second-half burst and held a 66-65 lead late. But a tie-up on the defense end gave possession to EAC in the final 30 seconds before they hit the go-ahead bucket with 9.7 seconds left.
Yaxel Lendeborg led the way on the glass for Arizona Western with 10.
No other Matador was in double-figures.
Arizona Western will get a break from the road, but not Eastern Arizona. The Matadors will return home Friday and Saturday for another double-header with the Gila Monsters, this time in Yuma. The women will proceed both games.
Friday will be at 5:30pm and 7:30pm while Saturday will be at 2:00pm and 4:00pm. The women will play first on both days.
All four games will be broadcast on AWC TV, Channel 74 on Spectrum in Yuma, and streamed on the Matadors Sports Network (awcmatadors.com)
